Today, almost all printing companies are vying with each other in claiming they are eco-friendly. But the unfortunate fact is most of them are not and in reality only 5 percent of all printing firms have actually been certified as meeting the necessary green printing requirements.
The environment relies upon every individual for doing his/her bit to protect it and every business should demonstrate a commitment to eco-friendliness. You should be certified with ISO14001 and FSC instead of making false claims or paying lip service to environment issues.
To satisfy yourself whether a printing company is genuinely eco-friendly, you can verify if it is a member of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) which promotes forest conservation and advocates greenery.
FSC is a certification system that sets internationally recognized standards, trademark assurance and accreditation services to all types of companies that partake in responsible forestry. The printing house you deal with must be using recycled paper or conventional paper that has obtained FSC certification.
Printing houses who are FSC certified can generally be trusted for taking their environmental responsibilities seriously. To be precise, if you are genuinely concerned about being an eco-friendly organization, then you should only opt for a printing company who can prove their green printing claims - particularly with regard to their use of printing ink and paper.
It is a well known fact that production of paper depletes forests, water, and energy supplies. Besides, many white papers are bleached via a chlorination process that releases dangerous chemicals and pollutants into the water bodies. Choose paper that is 100 percent post-consumer waste (PCW), processed chlorine free (PCF), uncoated, FSC certified, made by renewable energy sources like wind or solar power.
Another popular misconception is that printing green is more expensive than using traditional printing methods. However, this is not the case all the time. Vegetable-based inks are often competitively priced compared with petroleum-based inks. Besides, many recycled, TCF, and ECF papers are in fact less expensive than virgin.
The best solution may be to avoid paper printing as far as possible and opt for online printing instead. Yet for commercial organizations that rely on printed marketing campaigns for support and publicity, cutting out paper altogether might not be a workable option.
Try waterless printing, if possible as that eliminates the dampening systems used in conventional printing. Digital printing, which avoids the film and chemicals as opposed to traditional printing processes, is another excellent alternative. Make it a point to avoid using bindings, adhesives, or foil stamps in packaging.
If you print your project on recycled paper using soy-based inks or wind-powered presses, let all your customers know about it. Add a simple line of text explaining how the piece was printed or include a discreet Forest Stewardship Council, Soy Seal, or Processed Chlorine Free symbol. This can prove a powerful marketing tool as all people who care for the environment will patronize you. Besides, you will also be publicizing the cause of green earth.
